Representatives from the NNN Recycle Brigade squads gathered at the Hamiltons to enjoy the beautiful day, celebrate their 10 ton recyclable collection record and receive awards from the Dutchess of Detritus.
From Allyn (Vaughn and Jill Neumeister), Belfair (Monna and Dave Haugen, Brooke Quigley and Denny Hamilton), Grapeview (Michael Siptroth and Joe Teisan), Red Apple (Dan, Sheri, Robert and Daniel Staley), Tahuya, (Jeff Gislason and Mary Walden), Taylor Town (Adrienne and Linda Amar) representatives received from Marcia Hamilton, fetchingly adorned in a plastic bag crown and white garbage bag cape, an elegant award made from a plastic lid, old pipe cleaners, and left-over Obama award blue ribbon. Marcia also mentioned her recycling inspirations, Ann Cacciari and Monna Haugen. Denny Hamilton read a poem about the success of the brigade’s work.
The table whose centerpiece (of discarded aluminum cans, plastic bottles, and waste paper collected in a large plastic ice cream tub) was lost in the delicious array of pot luck fare–clams from the Neumeisters, Denny H’s BBQ chicken, potato salad by the Haugens, hors d’oevres a la fresh tomatoes from the Staleys, exquisite grapes from Michael and Bill’s garden, garden fresh tomatoes from the Amars, chili by Joe, and bread and cheese and wine from the Roys. The piece de résistance, however, was Teri Jelinek’s famous flag cake—to remind us that we were part of Organizing for America and we had a job to do. Jeremy Walker, OFA field director, was also there to speak about next steps in the health care reform effort OFA is mobilizing. And, as a result of his stirring speech, six people volunteered to be part of the Mason County Commitment Call team, tasked with getting 1500 commitments (to call our representatives) by October 18. (This is very easily done through Votebuilder, and we can use more more more volunteers—just call Marcia Hamilton at 360-275-701. Even if you haven’t been trained on Votebuilder you can do it.
Most missing in action were the Wilsons (from Wilson Recycling), Mary and Bob Chilton and Judy Scott (Belfair Squad), the Nelson-Kings (Taylor Town Squad), the Coteys (Grapeview Squad), the Wandells and Mooses (Collins Lake Squad), the Shorts (Bucks Prairie Squad), and Mendy and Allie Harlow and Brandon Parker (Johns Prairie Squad) and our Communications/Database operator Della Rogers. Their medals will be sent or hand delivered.
