Nominating Convention Report
On May 12th Mason County Democrats held their Nominating Convention and nominated a full slate of candidates for county elective partisan offices. All six incumbents running for reelection were nominated and two new candidates were nominated for open seats. Congratulations to all who ran, and my regards to those PCOs who took the time and effort to carefully make their choices. Information on all the candidates is available at our candidate page, http://masoncountydemocrats.com/endorsements/candidates.html

Candidate Filing Week
Candidate filing week is nearly here and all PCOs and other candidates must file by June 11th if they wish to be on the ballot. There are some changes this year. There is no filing fee for PCOs, and electronic filing will be available for the first time.

Perhaps the simplest way to file is to come to Mason Democrats regular meeting on June 9th, where we will have all candidate filing forms available, and help with filling them out. We'll have more information about electronic filing after June 3, when our PCO coordinator Marcia Hamilton and I will attend a training session with the Auditor.

If you're thinking about running for PCO, now is your chance! PCOs have the exclusive right to nominate Democratic candidates for public office as we did last month, plus other responsibilities. For more information contact Marcia Hamilton at 360-275-6701 or This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it .

Party Office
At last month's meeting the party voted to open an office for the campaign season, so we selected and rented a space at 218 West Cota Street in Shelton. My thanks to Sheri Staley for finding several spaces for us to consider, and recommending this one. Now we need volunteers to staff it! There is plenty of work to do, from identifying voters to updating VoteBuilder to assisting candidates with their campaigns. I expect everyone who voted for the office to volunteer a few hours a week to work there, so contact Sheri at 360-490-2838 or This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it to tell her when you're available. We still need some office equipment. If you can lend any of the following please let me or Sheri know:

  • Print server
  • Copier
  • TV and DVD player
  • Office chairs
  • Carpet
  • Filing cabinet
  • Shelving

Respect
Election season sometimes brings out those who attempt to further their goals by bringing down others, and unfortunately they have stirred. Someone has been stealing political signs, perhaps with the belief that limiting the speech of others is somehow good for democracy. Nothing could be further from the truth. Our economic system is based on the free market and so is our political system. That free market of ideas requires freedom of speech, which means letting everyone speak their piece. We choose the winner with our vote, not with vandalism.

We have an excellent slate of candidates who can stand proud on their records, qualifications, and goals. Mason County Democrats oppose mudslinging, lies, and misrepresentation directed at any candidate, issue, or party. We are better than that, and we will treat the opposition better than that.

Next Meetings
The next Executive Committee meeting is 6pm June 1st; call for location. The next regular meeting is 7 pm Wednesday, June 9th, at the PUD 3 meeting room.
