The Democratic Women's Club will meet on Wednesday, July 20, 2011, at El Sarape Restaurant in Gateway Center. A no-host luncheon begins at 11:30 a.m. and the meeting begins at noon. We don't have a program set yet and may have the opportunity to just talk politics and up-coming elections.
At our June 15th meeting, our State Representative Kathy Haigh spoke to the group about the recent legislative session. Kathy serves as the Chair of the House Education Appropriations and Oversight Committee and as such has been intimately involved in K-12 and higher education budget and legislative issues.
She talked about the discouraging effects the budget situation has caused which will require public schools to cut their budgets by1.9% in the coming year. Although she expressed displeasure with the final budget as adopted, she felt it represented the best compromise that could be reached, noting that many of the programs which help low income and disadvantaged people were maintained. Kathy spoke to some of the other issues addressed during the session and graciously responded to questions raised by the group. It's obvious that she continues to represent us well in the 35th District!
Hope to see you at our meeting next month on July 20th!
Peace,
Marilyn Sayan
