Upcoming Events

The Democratic Women's Club will meet on Wednesday, April 20, 2011 at El Sarape Restaurant in Gateway Center. A no-host luncheon begins at 11:30 a.m. with the program following a short business meeting at noon. Our program for that meeting has not yet been confirmed.

At our March 16th meeting, Kim Klint, Executive Director of Mason Matters, was our speaker. She explained that Mason Matters is a non-profit organization which focuses on emerging health and social issues that affect the quality of life of Mason County residents. It is funded by Mason General Hospital and the Mason County Health Department as well as numerous grants from other sources. Individuals serving on Mason Matters' Board of Directors represent business, social and human services, education, health care, local government and citizen stakeholders in Mason County.

Kim noted that the current focus is on keeping children healthy and keeping them from dropping out of school. Some of the many other issues that have been addressed in the past are domestic violence (resulting in the creation of Turning Pointe DV Shelter), teen pregnancy (resulting in a free teen clinic with Planned Parenthood), water quality issues, assessment of housing needs and the development of the Mason County Homeless Plan, creation of resource coordinators in school districts to ensure that students and their families have access to the various services available to them, and the creation of a free dental clinic. As you can tell from the above, the impact the organization has had on this community is truly amazing.

I'm sure we'll have a great meeting next month as well so I hope to see you on April 20th.

Peace,

Marilyn Sayan
