As state committee woman for the 35th legislative district I have the privilege of representing the Democratic voters of Mason County at Washington State Democratic Central Committee (WSDCC) meetings. Cathi Baily Bright is the state committee woman for Mason county, but since Mason County is part of the 35th LD we’re both accountable to the Democrats of Mason County. I see my role as a conduit, someone who shares information between groups of people.
I attend local meetings of the 35th LD and MCDCC and attempt to guage what is important to people and should be brought to the State Committee. Likewise, when I attend the state meetings, I listen for information that will impact our local party. The State Committee Men and Women meet 3-4 times a year to conduct the business of the state party. The state party is the next step in the hierarchy between local parties and the national party.
The resolutions that we pass at the local level reflect the values and concerns of the people, truly grassroots sources. Sometimes these resolutions are directed at the state party and are sent to the state committee as proposed resolutions for consideration. When something, such as health care reform, is under consideration there are many resolutions from local parties sent to the state level and then the state resolutions committee must consider all of them and try to meld them into one or two resolutions that the state party can adopt (or reject). It is our job as state committee people to evaluate and decide what positions the state party will take on issues, based on the input we get from our home districts/committees and that reflect state party platform.
In election years, the party works to support and elect Democratic candidates at all levels of government, starting with local races and going on to include national races. In non-election years, we work to build the party and get ready for the next round of elections. We also work on issues that concern our constituents. for example, the State party took a strong stand in opposition I-1033, because it would be so harmful to Washington state. We also voted to support Approve Referendum 71 as a equal rights issue at the last state meeting.
This is a very brief view of the role of State Committee people in the political process. Our roles are as varied as the people you elect to fill these important positions. Please feel free to contact me with questions and concerns about our party and what we do.
