I am Melody Peterson, Candidate for Mason County Assessor. I would like to take just a few minutes of your time to outline my qualifications and experience. For the last 7 years, out of my 17 years at the assessor’s office, I have been the Chief Deputy. This position requires monitoring and controlling workflow to meet RCW mandated deadlines, assisting the Assessor in managing personnel matters, such as hiring, employee evaluations, discipline and terminations. I participate with the assessor and chief appraiser in development of assessor’s office policies and procedures. I must maintain effective work relationships with associates, supervised employees, representatives of other county offices and agencies and the general public. I supervise all office personnel and act for the Assessor during her absence.
The Assessor’s office personnel consists of the Assessor, Chief Deputy, and Chief Appraiser who are non-union management. The nine appraisers belong to the Teamsters Union, and the four clerical, are AFSCME Union. I include this internal office structuring because other submitted articles neglected to correctly identify management and supervised employees.
My priorities when elected will be to begin the State mandated annual revaluation as quickly as possible with the goal of completion before the 2014 deadline, committing to attending community meetings, eliminating the accumulated work backlog, and finalizing my plan to create several satellite office locations in the North Mason area. The respect of the current staff and my years in a management position will give me the advantage of a smaller learning curve than my opponents, and will enable me to transition to Assessor more smoothly than my opponents.
