As politically active Democrats, it is in our interest to respond to the national census and we should encourage everyone we know to respond.
There are both monetary and political reasons the census is important. Federal funding for schools, hospitals, emergency services, and other public works projects, is determined by data gathered in the census every ten years. Our legislative representation at state and national levels is determined by the results of the census.
The census form consists of a mere ten questions this year.
It is against the law to publish or disclose private information gathered on census forms; so the information one provides will not end up in some sleazy ad person's phone bank.
So spend 10-15 minutes and fill out and mail back the form in the postage paid envelope which will be arriving mid March in your mail box.
There is more information about the census at the website for the 2010 U.S. Census: http://2010.census.gov/2010census.
