5/21/08: Mason County Democrats met in a nominating convention in Belfair on Wed. evening, May 21, and overwhelmingly nominated Lynda Ring-Erickson and Roslynne Reed as the Partys nominees for the two county commissioner districts on the ballot this year. Both have Democratic opponents, so there were two candidates vying for each nomination.
In Commissioner District 1, incumbent Lynda Ring-Erickson is opposed by DemocratRichard Ryan. Of the district 1 precinct committee officers (PCOs) present and voting, 5 voted for Ring-Erickson, none for Ryan. The weighted vote in that race was 33 to 0, with each PCO allowed a weighted vote equal to the number of delegates from the respective precinct at the presidential caucus earlier in the year. Weighted votes in District 1 precincts varied from 2 to 10.
In Commissioner District 2, incumbent Timothy Sheldon is opposed by Roslynne Reed. Of the district 2 PCOs present and voting, 10 supported Reed, and 1 supported Sheldon. The weighted vote was 59 to 1. Weighted votes in District 2 precincts varied from 1 to 11.
Following the vote, Reed said, “I think it shows the Democratic Party is behind my candidacy and I appreciate that. I will work hard for all Mason County residents”.
Ring-Erickson was not present, due to attending an a meeting in Utah regarding elimination of the “Payment in Lieu of Taxes” that counties have relied on from 1909 until it was cut from the federal budget two years ago, she indicated in advance via email. She is attending the meeting at her own expense. Reached later by phone, she said, "I am very, very pleased. I appreciate the support. I am thrilled."
Marilyn Sayan, a PCO in Commissioner District 3, who chaired the nominating convention, said, “Democrats have spoken. Some may not agree with the two-party system, but that is what exists for us”. She added, “It has been a tedious process”.
