RESOLUTIONS OF THE MASON COUNTY DEMOCRATS

(adopted in County Convention on April 10, 2010)

ADAGE (MCDCC 2010 Resolution)
Whereas, ADAGE, a joint venture, proposes to build a power-generating plant on Johns Prairie Road that will burn woody biomass and that will use city and county facilities and roads and will take tax dollars to support;
And
Whereas, the public has not been provided adequate information about the
•    Detailed effects on air quality;
•    Adequacy of water supply and sewer capacity;
•    Quality and disposition of wastewater;
•    Ash residue composition, use and disposal;
•    Effects on traffic flow and road infrastructure;
•    Actual permanent employment within Mason County;
•    Financial cost to Mason County through tax reductions and/or exemptions;
•    Affordable electricity made available to consumers in our county;
And
Whereas, the residents of Mason County deserve to live in a healthy, safe, sustainable environment;
Be it therefore resolved by the Mason County Democrats that the elected officials of Mason County and the City of Shelton postpone any final decisions involved in the construction of the ADAGE plant until they have received definitive results from the environmental impact studies, and allow its construction to proceed only if the results meet or exceed all state & federal environmental standards.

Comprehensive Immigration Reform (MCDCC 2010 Resolution)
Whereas, twelve million undocumented immigrants live in the US,
And
Whereas, undocumented persons are a vital part of the economy,
Be it therefore resolved by the Mason County Democrats that the US Congress should achieve comprehensive immigration reform that includes a humane process leading to (1) lawful, permanent resident status and eventual citizenship; and (2) an adequate number of work visas to cover those who only desire to work in the United States.

Consumer Protections in Financial Matters (MCDCC 2010 Resolution)
Whereas, consumers have been unfairly treated and victimized by banks and other financial institutions;
And
Whereas, these practices have contributed to our current economic problems as both individuals and a country,
Be it therefore resolved by the Mason County Democrats that at the Federal and State levels of government there should be an independent agency providing oversight and consumer protections in financial transactions for all citizens.

Corporation Personhood (MCDCC 2010 Resolution)
Whereas, the Supreme Court of the United States has recently made an unprecedented decision to grant “personhood” to corporations, granting corporations those inherent human rights guaranteed and protected by the US Constitution for individuals;
And
Whereas, the Court’s decision allows corporations authority to spend unlimited funds for candidate and issue campaigns;
And
Whereas, this Court decision extends rights to corporations that were intended by the US Constitution for human beings only,
Be it therefore resolved by the Mason County Democrats that Congress pass legislation that will nullify the recent Supreme Court decision and deny personhood status to corporations.

Electric Car Parking (MCDCC 2010 Resolution)
Whereas, as more electric cars are being manufactured and driven, more parking spaces specified for electric cars are being created;
And
Whereas, many drivers of gas/diesel cars are ignoring “electric vehicle parking only” signs;
And
Whereas, if electric cars do not park at designated areas, they cannot plug in and may have to be towed,
Be it therefore resolved by the Mason County Democrats that all drivers violating “electric vehicle parking only” signs shall be fined in the same manner and amount as for disabled parking violations.

Ethics Review Process (MCDCC 2010 Resolution)

Whereas, we currently lack a formal process of ethics review of elected officials at many local and statewide levels of government,
Be it therefore resolved by the Mason County Democrats that the State of Washington should implement a public ethics review process for all who hold any elective office within the state.

Signs on Public School Property (MCDCC 2010 Resolution)

Whereas, Mason County Democrats arrived, as scheduled, at Pioneer Primary School on April 10, 2010, and saw a publicly displayed sign in this public school building of the American flag and “God Bless America;”
And
Whereas, the Mason County Democratic Platform states under the heading of Human Rights, “We support the separation of church and state;”
And
Whereas, the Mason County Democratic Platform states under the heading of Education, “We support the doctrine of separation of church and state in all publicly funded schools;”
Be it therefore resolved by the Mason County Democrats that all public school districts in Mason County shall support removal of signs that promote any link between church and state from public school property.

Two-Office Holders (MCDCC 2010 Resolution)
Whereas, people who hold an elected, compensated office at city, town, or county levels of government paid for by tax payers;
And
Whereas, these elected positions demand a number of work hours, focus, after-hours research, and official committee responsibilities,
Be it therefore resolved by the Mason County Democrats that any person who holds a city, town, or county elected office for which he or she receives compensation is prohibited from simultaneously holding an elected state or legislative office for which he or she also receives compensation.
